SHS Guidance Office
Instructor: Mrs. Egli & Mrs. Gravelin
The Sidney High School Guidance Office is located on the 1st floor of the high school. Any visitor coming to the guidance office must first sign in at the Main Office and get a “Visitor” pass. Our office is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

There are two counselors available in the Guidance Office. Mrs. Egli works with students whose last name begins with the letters A – L, 9th – 12th grade. Mrs. Gravelin works with students whose last name begins with the letters M – Z, 9th – 12th grade. Mrs. Hoag is the guidance secretary. Our phone number is 607-563-2135, ext. 4256.

The Guidance Office offers many services and supports. We assist students with scheduling and with mapping out a 4 year plan for high school. We explore the possibilities beyond high school, including college, the world of work, and the military. We also assist students with the college application process and provide many resources for scholarship possibilities. We maintain a “College and Career” Center for students to resource, and provide information on leadership opportunities such as HOBY and RYLA. Additionally, we offer short term counseling for students to help them navigate the “bumps” that might interfere with their academics. Progress reports and report cards are generated through the Guidance Office as are many other high school academic reports.

The Guidance Office is here for our high school students. Our goal is to challenge students to achieve their greatest potential, to support and assist them along the way, and to help them find success as they enter the world beyond graduation. Our door is always open, and we welcome and appreciate collaboration with our students, their parents, the faculty, and the community.

Senior Conferences
Seniors are currently in the process of meeting with their guidance counselor to discuss their current academic status, to talk about post high school plans including college options and applications, and to fill out necessary paper work for graduation in June 2012.  Any senior who has not yet made an appointment must do so.  Please stop in the guidance office or give Mrs. Hoag a call to schedule your appointment. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting.
SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
This year, pending the appropriation of State funds during the 2011-2012 session of the NYS Legislature, Sidney will be awarded 1 - $1,500 and 3 - $500 scholarships , renewable for up to four academic years of undergraduate study or up to five years of academic study, if the program of study normally requires five years as defined by the Commissioner of Education.

There is no student application for this scholarship.  The selection criteria for nominees that will be used to determine the Scholarships for Academic Excellence will be Regents Test Scores.  Sidney High School will select the winners by computing a weighted average of the scores on the Regents examinations taken by students prior to their senior year in all of the following subjects:  Comprehensive English, Alg. II/Trig., Global Studies, US History/Government, and three sciences (Earth Science, Living Env., and Chemistry or Physics).

Each scholarship winner must graduate from Sidney High School by the end of the 2011-2012 school year.  Each scholarship winner must be a legal resident of NYS for at least one year prior to September 30, 2011.  Selected students must be in attendance as a full-time, matriculated student at an approved New York State postsecondary institution by the Fall 2012 semester.
College Reps and Military Reps Visit Sidney High School
During the course of the school year, various college representatives visit the high school to meet with students interested in learning more about their particular college. The college reps set up a block of time, usually 1 period out of the school day, and sit down with one student or a group of students for an informational discussion. The reps welcome questions from the students and often pass out literature about their college. Some colleges will also offer application fee waivers at this time. The meetings are held in the conference room of the guidance office.

As well, representatives from the various branches of the military periodically visit the high school usually during Junior/Senior lunch. The reps meet with interested students in the guidance office conference room on an informal basis. At times, the military rep may call the morning of a visit to set up the appointment.

Parents are welcome to attend any of these sessions. Upcoming visits will be posted on the Calendar Page. If you plan to attend a session, please call the morning of the visit in order to be sure it is still scheduled.
Scholarships . . .
The Guidance Office has a scholarship bulletin board which has several scholarship opportunities currently posted. The scholarships are continuously updated. Seniors, please stop and check it out! If you see a scholarship that you might be eligible for, take note of the scholarship ID number, and ask Mrs. Hoag for the appropriate application.
